Maintaining a healthy relationship is much easier than many couples think. In this article I will outline three easy ways to help you find success for yourself. If your relationship is on the rocks, you know how it feels to feel helpless to change things. If your relationship is not on the rocks, you can also benefit from the information in this article to help keep your own romantic life on an even keel.
It's pretty basic that you want to refer to your partner in positive terms as much as you can, including in your own thoughts. But we want to go beyond this an examine the hidden intent behind certain statements such as “you never" and “you always". Nobody always does or does not do something at all times.
Communicating to people in this manner does a couple of things. One, it puts the person you're talking to on the offensive because you're accusing them or something. Two, it helps you justify in your mind why this is such a big issue (ie; because “you always do that"). This is a common and easy way to improve communication in your relationship.
Easy Step To A Healthy Relationship #2: Give What You Want
If you've ever thought to yourself “I wish my (boyfriend/ girlfriend) would do X for me when I've had a bad day- well if (she/he) won't do Y for me, I won't do Y for (him/ her)", this is a mistake. If you want someone to treat you nicely, then do it to them first.
Of course, there's no guarantee that your significant other will reciprocate. But if not, then some talking may be in order. Just be sure to approach the topic calmly and to leave the “always" and “never" statements out of the conversation.
Easy Step To A Healthy Relationship #3: Listen (don't just hear)
Part of communication is listening and not just hearing. People like people who like them, so listen intently and make comments or ask questions to show that you have. Never interrupt, and if you do simply apologize and continue listening.
If someone is really listening to you, more than a few “mmm hmm"'s every other minute should result. What's really nice is that if you are listening, your partner is more likely to listen to you, which helps with communication immensely.
Summary
None of the information in this article is new or revolutionary but you'd be surprised how many couples fail to understand these. It's a shame because these are simple, day to day tasks that will help in all your important relationships. Once more, if you apply these 3 easy steps to your own relationship, you'll be nurturing it for years to come.
